The  region

Terrific views, beautiful, quiet landscapes, various sports activities in summer and winter, thrills. In the Vosges everyone finds something for his taste and rhythm.

Tips and suggestions for great experiences in the region :

The hiking trail 'route des crêtes'

Once it was a strategic line, today the 'Route des crêtes' of the High Vosges is one of the most beautiful hiking trails.

The 77 km long ridge road offers a very special natural experience, a magnificient  view over the Rheinebene, the Black Forest and the Bernese Alps. The pass road runs between 940 and 1400 m from the Col de Bonhomme in the north to the Grand Ballon in the south. The long-distance walk GR 5 runs parallel to the ridge. This unique itinerary gives the hiker the opportunity to admire the characteristic landscape with its mountain lakes and discover the flora and fauna of the Vosges.

Note: the road is open from May to November depending on the weather.

Waterfalls of Tendon

Drive to the parking lot of the small waterfall between Tendon and Gérardmer. Your will find the car park at the end of a forest path, next to the small waterfall. (It falls in 2 cascades in the creek ‘Scouet’ ) From there, go down to the bridge, cross it and start your hike.

Once again precisely: the small forest path goes from the D11 between Docelles and Le Tholy. The marking of the trails was just renewed. You have to follow the "small red caps" to get to the big waterfall. A timeless hiking experience. As in a fairyland, you will discover the large waterfall in the middle of the forest. It is 32 m high and falls down in 3 successive cascades

You can climb up to the top and enjoy a wonderful panorama. You can easily go back over a forest path..

You should count for this walk of 7 km, 1 hour and 30 minutes. This walk is easy and very pleasant, suitable for families with children and very popular during the hot summer months.

The cascade de Tendon, is the longest waterfall of the Vosges and a wonderful oasis of freshness at 600 m altitude. In front of the big waterfall, in the middle of the forest, there is a beautiful clearing with a pond, the perfect place for a picnic.

The moors of Lispach

Picturesque is the moorish lake of Lispach in the valley in front of the wooded mountainsides. An interesting contrast is the quiet moor of Machais with its rare flora.

The moors of Lispach and la Ténine in La Bresse, are classified as "nature reserves". The footpath around the lake of Lispach is equipped with instructional panels on the formation of moors.

Lac de Gérardmer

The lake of Gérardmer is a mountain lake at 660 m altitude. With 155 hectares it is the largest natural lake in the Vosges and Lorraine.

Around the lake there is a circular hiking trail of over 6 km, which can be surrounded on foot or by bike. Water sports enthusiasts will be offered a wide range of different activities.

  • Sailing

  • Rowing

  • Windsurfing

  • Canoe kayak

  • Pedalboat

  • Solar powered cruise ship

Note: Bathing on the beach of ‘Union Nautique’ from June to September..

Lac de Longemer

The river Vologne flows through the mountain lake and supplies the sea surface of 76 ha with fresh water. The surrounding mountains form the scenic background and the natural water's edge of the Lac de Longemer. The lake is 1950 m long, 550 m wide and 34 m deep.

Since 2002, the lake and its surroundings have been classified as a 'remarkable site' and thus protected, so that its beauty and originality remain intact.

Le Saut des Cuves

Waterfalls in the valley of the lakes. The wild creek 'Vologne' falls in several cascades over large granite blocks. From the protruding rocks, you can see the waterfalls particularly well. Not far from it, you can discover the Pont des Fées, rebuilt in 1782, the stone Charlemagne (the legend tells that his horse has left an imprint here) and the islands Marie Louise.

Maybe you are looking for a sporting activity…

Cycling

Lovers of cycling, mountains and 100 mountain passes ( les cent cols ) are at the right place!

Small forest paths, magnificent panorama on the highways, hilly stretches or perhaps rather flat. Here you have endless possibilities and the agony of choice.

For lovers of mountain passes: There are 400 passes to climb! Expand your collection in the Vosges.

Let yourself be seduced by the beautiful nature and mountain scenery when cycling with your family or on a challenging course.

La Voie Verte des Hautes Vosges

The 'voie verte' of the High Vosges is one of the most beautiful bike trails in France.

The attraction of the track is due to several factors. The entire route of around 50 km runs along a former railway line, so that the trail is nowhere interrupted by road traffic or local transit. In addition, the course has a balanced gradient (rather level). It is very scenic since the cycle path is embedded in the mountains of the Vosges, which are up to 1000 meters high, and it passes through a quiet and relaxing area with small villages.

Worth a visit: The town of Remiremont where numerous street cafés invite you to linger.

Pedestrians and skaters can also use them. Only motorized traffic is denied access.

Mountainbike

There are over 300 km marked cycle paths for family trips or trails.

Bike paths with the mountainbike

Le domaine de Gérardmer, there are 8 marked cycle paths over 80 km, all difficulties

Le domaine de Xonrupt offers you 2 marked cycle paths over 21 km and 9 signposted hiking trails over 200 km (departure on the Col du Surceneux)

The domain of the 3 sites regroups 200 km and 14 circuits.

Le sentier des roches dans le massif des Vosges

The rocky path: an extraordinary hike

The hike along the rocky path, with the most beautiful views of the massif, is a must. The path begins at the Col de la Schlucht, the border between Lorraine and Alsace. It is a stretching alpine hike around the Hohneck massif. Goosebumps are guaranteed! Mountain boots are compulsory for this challenging path. In case of bad weather this hike can not be done. It is a 12 km path with a height difference of 300 m. The hike can be made in 3 hours and 30 minutes depending on physical and sporting conditions. If you still have strength and passion, you can go down to the Schiessrothried lake and return via Wormspel.

When you have arrived at the summit of Hohneck, you can take a break in the Auberge, which is located at 1366 m. There is a fantastic view, sometimes up to the Alps!

Climbing on the Martinswand

The rocks of the Martinswand have a height of 20 to 60 m. Here you will find some of the most difficult free climbing tracks in France. The climbing area of the rough and solid granite walls consists essentially of four rock massifs: summit boom, small Matterhorn, Martinswand and Straßburger Wall. The granite promises nice friction and the small edges require a good foot technique. The 'La Martinswand' is by no means just for extreme sports climbers, because there are many worthwhile tracks in the III to IV degree. The wall is exemplary protected in terms of free climbing.

Acces to the Martinswand

The Martinswand is located on the alsatian side of the Vosges mountains, just a few kilometers from Colmar. From Colmar take the direction Munster (D 417) and the Col de la Schlucht (1135m). Take the turnoff to the south on the Route des Crêtes (D 430) into the direction of Hohneck, after around 2 km you will see a parking lot on your left side (point 1226 m). From here a small road branches off to the Auberge des Trois-Fours. From the parking lot it is a 20-minute-walk to the entrance of the Martinswand. Stable trekking shoes are recommended.

Best climbing period: the summer months.

Lac Blanc Adventure Park

The adventure park in Orbey on Lake Lac Blanc offers a touch of adventure in the trees. It goes from one tree to another, sometimes at a height of 25 meters ... But do not worry, the courses are secured with rope ladders, Tarzan ropes, nets and hanging bridges, which will allow you to jog your way through nature!

The adventurous fun requires more balance than strength and is almost feasible for everyone (adults, children, groups).  You will soon be able to recover seemingly forgotten reflexes and develop unimagined balance, courage and agility while climbing ladders or go down cable winches.

The Lac Blanc adventure park offers 9 courses of different difficulty levels: on the squirrel course, fox course, rafting course and lynx course you will quickly lose the ground under the feet on the top of the trees.

Cross-country skiers can choose between more than 100 km of cross-country ski trails. 2 red, 2 blue and 3 green slopes provide plenty of variety and fun for all levels of performance. Particularly beautiful is the blue slope "Hauts Rupts" (No. 2), which passes partly through the forest, partly through clearings, past the farms and brooks, and even with a small bistro, where a pleasant break can be made. The course is 5 km long, the difference in altitude is 170 m. The 2nd recommended course is called "Hautes-Vannes" (No. 4). It leads up to an altitude of 1,000 m, is less frequented and has some fast descents during its course. Over 6 km the difference in height is 150 m.
